CHULAS
The CHULAS (or "songs of praise") are a series of call-and-response phrases that are sung immediately after the opening ladainha. They are also known by two other names: the entradas ("entries"), because they signal that the game is about to begin; or the louvação ("the praising") because they often praise one's mestre and the teachings of capoeira.

In traditional rodas, the chulas also mark the point where all eight instruments begin to play. Players waiting at the foot of the berimbau also begin their gestures acknowledging the mestre and the batería, and prepare to enter the game.

The link below opens examples of a few traditional chulas, presented the way they are commonly joined together. A mestre may sing only two or four of these chula phrases, or a long series of them, all in a semi-improvised manner.
